Okereocha was named winner in the Special COVID-19 Reporting Category for his entry titled: COVID-19: Uncertainties Over AfCFTA’s Delayed Implementation.
His entry was adjudged the best in the category, which was the first since WAMECA started in 2017. The story x-rayed how border closure, travel bans and other containment measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic undermined the immense possibilities promised by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Okereocha is a recipient of several other awards for excellence in journalism in different categories of the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME), Nigerian Media Merit Award (NMMA), and Nigerian Breweries Golden Pen Award.
