Two WAMECA Winners Participate in Continental Training Workshop in Addis Ababa

Two previous winners of the West Africa Media Excellence Conference and Awards (WAMECA) have been selected to participate in a two-day training workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for outstanding journalists across Africa on the protocols and mechanisms of the African Union (AU).

They are Sheila Williams of the BusinessDay Newspaper – Ghana, 2017 best reporter for the ECOWAS and Regional Integration category, and Adam Alqali of the AfricanNewspage, 2018 best reporter for the SDGs category. The training which will be held on July 18-19, 2019 is aimed at raising the awareness and understanding of journalists on the protocols and mechanisms of the African Union (AU) as well as provide them with the requisite skills on how to report more effectively on the AU and the ACDEG.

The training workshop is being organised by a Consortium of 14 prominent civil society organisations working to advance the implementation of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG). The Consortium is implementing the Africa We Want project, titled “Mobilising Civil Society Support for Implementation of the African Governance Architecture,” with funding support from the European Commission.

“All WAMECA winners apart from receiving plaques, certificates and cash prizes at the ceremony also become a fellow of the MFWA’s Journalism for Change Network. In addition, they have the opportunity to participate in all-year round high level capacity building programmes. It is a brand promise and we remain committed to it,” said Abigail Larbi-Odei, Programme Manager, Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA).  “All other winners will have such opportunities in due course.”
